Ooh Baby, a Triple! (And Big Blog Updates!)

Hiiiiiii! I’ve spent the past few weeks working on a new layout for my site! Frankly, I was getting a bit jealous looking at my webring neighbors and browsing the rest of Neocities. I felt my site was a bit too plain for my liking so uh….WELCOME! I’m really proud of the amount of work I put into building out my little corner of the web. I hope you all enjoy it! It was wild how spontaneous I was this weekend. I went to KBBQ with my fiancee’s friends and had a pretty great time. We were talking about Chainsaw guy and I mentioned that the guy who made that manga also made a movie that came out a couple years back called Look Back. I couldn’t get it out of my head as we were eating. I NEEDED to watch it. So we rushed home, grabbed some popcorn, and watched Look Back. Holy hell is that a phenomenal movie. My fiancee and I were crying for 20 minutes straight.

I’ve mentioned it in my last blog post but it’s difficult to explain why I feel the need to make things. It overtakes me. I feel starved do something….anything. The first time I saw Look Back, I thought it was cute. It didn’t hit me as hard as it did my friends in creative industries. Now that I’m at a point in my life where I can recognize the need I have to create, this movie destroyed me. Why do I create? Who is this for? If you haven’t seen the movie, I highly recommend it. Be ready with some tissues though!

My fiancee and I decided that same night, “Hey, we should go see Coyote vs Acme in theaters”. Going to the theaters is a huge ask for me because the movie has to be worth the $40 it costs to go. We hadn’t been out in awhile so...fuck it. Turns out, Regal was doing a deal. Our tickets were $7, popcorn was $5, and we got a free small ICEE. Fuck yeah. The universe wanted us to see this movie.

I thought the movie was cute. I’ve always been a huge fan of cartoons and animation. I spent so much of my childhood watching Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, Nicktoons, and Toon Disney (Later rebranded to DisneyXD). So I always get interested to see new takes on the classics. Looney Tunes is a fun one since the characters are so memorable and frankly, one dimensional, that you can do so much with it! The outline is there, so seeing how people decide to color in the lines is super fun. Coyote vs Acme is no exception. Genuinely fun to have a Who Framed Roger Rabbit style featuring Wiley Coyote of all characters. It sucks that we live in a time where creativity is being siphoned out for profit and offloaded to AI chatbots because some shareholder needs to make $1,000,000,001 instead of $1,000,000,000. I’d love to see more of this style with different characters or even outside of the Looney Tunes universe.

While we were leaving, I looked up and saw a sign that said “AKIRA 4K”. There it was….playing on the silver screen….and there was a hefty discount (and more popcorn) waiting for me. Now, I have never seen the movie. So you know I took my ass right back to the movies the very next day and watched Akira. What a movie!

First off, gorgeous. The first 20 minutes or so of that movie I think are damn near perfect. I love the use of reds and purples in the backgrounds. The animation is jaw dropping. The "Akira Slide" on the big screen? Pretty fucking sick. But damn does that movie have a lot to say and not a lot of time to say it. I was made aware that the manga was still going on while this movie was being made, so the author had to abridge his own creation. What’s here is good, but it pretty much writes out all the women in the movie. There’s this incredible scene with Kai that I was genuinely baffled went….nowhere. If you’ve seen it, you likely know exactly what I’m talking about. I digress, still a pretty good movie that really wants to talk about toxic masculinity only to trip over itself and be the exact thing it’s portraying as this awful monster. It's pretty cool to finally see the thing that inspired so much of the media after it.

3 movies in 3 days! That’s a new record for me. I also finally finished Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers Patch 5.3! I’M ANGRY ABOUT IT. I have been rolling my eyes at people who tell me Final Fantasy XIV is an RPG first and an MMO second. I’ve scoffed at folks telling me how incredible the story is. Sure sure. THEY WERE RIGHT. What an amazing capstone to that expansion. I genuinely feel like Shadowbringers might be one of the best experiences I’ve had playing a video game in a very long time. I hate how difficult it is to share that experience with new people because of how fucking long it takes to get there. The payoff was so worth it but damn they really need to consolidate the more boring setup to all of this. The rate at which my friends have bounced off of this game after hitting level 25-30 because of how slow the game goes is staggering. That’s my hot take for the evening. Go play FFXIV. Next week will be Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave time! I’m so excited! I took off on Friday to have a long weekend to play the game. Next time you hear from me, I’ll be gushing about my time in the Dagdan Empire. There’s so many Black people in this game…..I almost can’t believe it. It’s hard not to cry seeing the representation I wanted….no....needed for so long. Please don’t fuck this one up Intelligent Systems. You’ve tee’d the ball and this better be a homerun.
